How to Boost Your LinkedIn Profile’s Appeal to Hiring Managers

When a hiring manager views your LinkedIn profile, you have about 30 seconds to convince him or her that you’re what the company needs. Follow these ten tips to boost your profile’s appeal and ensure it isn’t one a hiring manager will pass over:

Build instant credibility with a professional-looking profile photo.

Make sure your profile headline clearly communicates what you’re all about (and not just your job title).

Provide even more detail about who you are with a professional summary that can be read aloud within 30 seconds.

Get your profile to show up on free searches by completing it.

Update your status at least once per week to seem more passionate.

Share the industry-related books you’re reading with the Reading List by Amazon application.

Join and participate in at least three industry-relevant groups.

Get to 150 connections in order to increase your chances of having first-degree connections in places you want to work.

Get ten or more recommendations to ensure you look like a top candidate.

How to Protect Your Private Data on Facebook During a Job Search
Say a recruiter at your dream company sends you a friend request on Facebook. Not adding him may offend him, but adding him gives him access to your private data. What do you do? The answer’s simple: Add the recruiter to a Limited Access list in your Facebook account.

First, you need to create a Limited Access friends list:

Go to the Account drop-down menu and choose Edit Friends.

Click on Create a List and then enter a name for your list, such as “Limited Access.”

Add names of any friends you want to limit access to.

Here’s where you want to add the recruiter’s name. You also may want to add any of your current friends who shouldn’t be seeing pictures of last week’s party.

Click on the Create List button.

Next, you want to set some custom privacy settings:

Go to the Account drop-down menu, click on Privacy Settings, and then choose Customize Settings.

Pick a category you want to limit friends’ access to.

For example, you may want to hide your religious and political views or Wall posts left by your beer-bonging friends.

Click on the drop-down menu and then select Customize to edit the custom settings.

Add your new Limited Access list in the Hide This From section and click on the Save Setting button.

Turn Twitter into a Real-Time Job Board
Twitter is more than just a way to find out about the latest celebrity breakup; it can also be a great tool for finding job openings in your area. Simply follow these steps:

Visit www.search.twitter.com.

Click on the Advanced Search link below the search box.

Enter “Hiring” or “Jobs” in the first field in the Words section.

Enter your zip code in the Places section and choose your radius in miles.

You can further refine your search by adding industry keywords in the search form.

Click on the Search button at the bottom of the page.

Click on the Feed for This Query link in the right column to add this feed to your RSS reader.
